LIME MORTAR
Lime mortars are common in older buildings
without cavities because the mortars have a
structure which readily allows water and water
vapour to escape from the wall instead of
building up and causing problems. Any water
within the mortar would expand when frozen in
wintry conditions, causing cracking,
deterioration and loss of weatherproofing.
Repointing with lime mortar is usually necessary
where the original lime mortar in a wall has
deteriorated over time as a result of natural
weathering or poor maintenance. It is also
required where a cement mortar or other
inappropriate mortar has been used to repoint
the wall. In these cases the cement mortar must
be completely removed and replaced with the
correct lime mortar.
Modern cavity walls do not need the same
‘breathability’ and so can safely use cement
mortars.
